Traveling Overseas: International Travel Tips
Tuesday, April 5th, 2011
There are many tips to consider when preparing to travel abroad. Many are entering into uncharted territory while others are returning to a country that they have visited before. Either way, there are rules and regulations that must be adhered to under government guidelines as well as practical tips for traveling overseas such as ensuring that travel medical insurance is bought. These facets will contribute to an enjoyable trip as well as your personal safety.
One of the biggest issues travelers have regardless of traveling overseas or closer to home is how to pack. When traveling internationally, it is best to travel light. Who wants the hassle of having to haul heavy luggage to the other side of the world? Pack only what you need into a smaller bag. It is certainly easier to purchase travel size toiletries such as soap, lotions, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoos and conditioners than to pack regular sizes that we use everyday. You can buy these before you leave or once you get there. Also, packing in smaller bags allows you to carry your bag on board the plane with you. This will avoid issues of lost baggage later. Remember, the less you pack, the more you can purchase while you travel.
Other important tips are to make sure that you have a valid signed passport and leave your itinerary with friends and relatives. Make sure that you have thoroughly researched your destination and are familiar about their laws. It is prudent to have some kind of medical coverage or international travel insurance. Some may feel that international travel insurance is a bit pricey but in some circumstances, if you are without insurance and a worse case scenario happens, your trip could be ruined. Coverage ranges from replacing the contents of lost wallets or needing medical evacuation in case of illness to lost baggage or delayed and cancelled trips due to family emergencies, terrorist activities or extreme weather situations.
Finally, don’t be a victim. Leave your valuables at home. However in case of emergencies, your embassy provides a service called (STEP), also known as a Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to assist you during your trip. Don’t ever forget to purchase travel insurance for Canadians because it will save you a lot of heartache for such a nominal amount. Happy travels!
