Spring is a nice time for tours that will take you whale watching as well as other sightseeing. There are quite a few companies that take you close to sighting spots and treat you very well while doing this. Whales are only one creature that you can tour to see. One company, Australian Pacific Touring, will take you on a nice variety of nature tours. They have some that take you with a small group in a four wheel drive vehicle through the wilds of Cape York.
