Lanzarote – Where Almost Every Day Is A Holiday

Sunday, September 26th, 2010

Visitors to the island of Lanzarote could be forgiven for thinking that there seems to be a fiesta every week. As this isn´t far from the truth. A recent survey concluded that there are on average forty-two public holidays per year in Spain and Lanzarote as one of the Canary Islands observes almost all of them.

There are saints days and holidays to mark dates of religious importance, such as Assumption which falls in August. Then there are bank holidays to mark the day the Canary Islands became an autonomous region in Spain and to celebrate the national constitution.

Not forgetting the two week period in February and March when the carnival visits every town and village on the island and local children have shorter school days to allow them to participate. Local customs and traditions are kept alive by these annual observances, which form a large part of the island´s culture.

But these holidays and high days actually don´t interfere with tourism at all. As many holidaymakers are delighted to find they have arrived in time to see the floats in the carnival procession or the fireworks to celebrate the Fiesta of San Gines.

Over the New Year, many Lanzarote hotels will put on their own firework displays to mark the occasion, which tend to merge with the municipal displays all down the coastline. And this is followed a few days later with the three kings procession, when traditionally Spanish families celebrate Christmas.

The major festivity of Los Dolores is also well attended with often up to fifty thousand residents converging on the village of Mancha Blanca. Where the miracle occurred which prevented the place from being buried under lava.

Some visitors become such enthusiastic followers of these local events they will plan their next trip to coincide with them. And as there is a good range of cheap flights to Lanzarote now available, it´s possible to simply come for a long weekend.

Perhaps the easiest way for holidaymakers to enjoy the varied aspects of the island´s culture is by making sure they arrange car hire in Lanzarote during their stay. As it can often make the difference between being able to participate in all the festivities planned instead of having to leave early.

One thing is certainly true that the Canarians and the Spanish in general know how to celebrate special days in public in style.
